Emaho Trees is a boutique tree farm specializing in a range of advanced, premium quality, Australian native trees grown in-ground for sub tropical to cool temperate landscaping. The property’s rich volcanic soil and climate is well suited to many popular and unique trees required to be hardy, drought tolerant and low maintenance.
The 40 acre farm was established in 2002 by James and Barbara McGeoch and was designed around sustainable farming practices. The farm operates on renewable energy, harvests rainwater for irrigation, uses only organic fertilisers and is a proud supporter of the local business and horticultural community. Emaho Trees is the first farm in Australia and NZ to achieve BCorp certification for its positive social and environmental impact.
B Corporations are leaders of the global movement of people using business as a force for good. Over the last ten years, Emaho Trees has provided trees to major Council Projects and high profile landscape projects in Queensland, NSW and Victoria. Also, Emaho has exported trees to major landscape projects in the Middle East, China, Hong Kong and Macau including Disneyland in Hong Kong and Shanghai, and MGM Cotai in Macau.
Barbara and James have cultivated their love of Australian native plants and trees for close to 40 years. Prior to establishing Emaho Trees, they owned Birkdale Nursery for 25 years and were a leading supplier of plants in Australia and internationally. Birkdale Nursery was the first nursery in Australia to achieve ISO Quality Assurance certification in 1995.
James has over 20 years’ experience working overseas through his company, Birkdale International, in Hong Kong, China and Macau landscaping high profile projects including Disneyland in Hong Kong and Shanghai and the City of Dreams, Cotai Strip, Macau.
In 2017, James and Barbara established a consultancy company in China, Ornatec International Consultancy (Beijing) Limited. Through this company, James consults to the Zhengdong New District Management Committee, Shanghai Gardens (Group) Co. Limited and Beijing Florascape Company. He has since retired from Birkdale International although he continues to consult on a range of projects in Hong Kong, China and Macau.
Both James and Barbara have been very active in supporting the exporting community in Australia and served on a number of government and industry Boards. Barbara is a Director of the Export Council of Australia which advocates and promotes Australian exports and raises the awareness of the importance of exporting to Australia's economy.
James and Barbara have always been passionate about growing trees and developing gardens. Apart from the commercial trees, Emaho has extensive gardens influenced in particular through their involvement in landscape projects in Japan and China. Embracing sustainability and organic practices, they also grow their own organic fruit, vegetables and herbs. In 2017, the Emaho gardens were featured on Gardening Australia and have been opened, on a number of occasions, to the public to raise funds for local charities.
